The area known as the New Forest National Park area covers nearly 220 square miles and it is recognised as being the largest area of unsown vegetation in the lowlands of Britain. Created as a royal forest by William I in the 11th century for the sole purpose of the royal hunt, today the New Forest is a designated National Character Area by Natural England.
